Our Mission Statement.

Amalgamated Cooperators United (ACU) formed to save our homes.

Initially, we banded together because we are threatened with having our gas shut off on or about July 1st. This will result in over 800 families being unable to cook meals and dry clothes in the gas-powered dryers of our laundry rooms.

As ACU develops strategies to remedy this situation, we learn more and more how local law 152, an unfunded mandate, in combination with New York State Homes and Community Renewal (HCR)’s mishandling has resulted in our Co-op being on the verge of bankruptcy. The current Board of HCR seems more focused on new construction rather than preserving and protecting existing affordable housing. We are fighting for our homes and our cooperative way of life, under threat from either incompetence or corruption (or both).

Amalgamated Housing was formed almost 100 years ago by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America with a vision to provide good, affordable housing for working people. We are the oldest limited equity cooperative in the country.

We mean to survive.
